5 Ways to Not Blow Your Scorecard at Huron Shores Golf Club
Golf is seeing a massive comeback.
According to the National Golf Foundation, on-course play hit a record 29.1 million people this year. While the media focuses on the pros, the real growth is coming from the 14 million casual players who just want a good round and a cold beverage. Oh, and maybe a burger!
Whether you're in a Tuesday night league or a weekend outing, golf can be a glorious day or a grind. To help you keep your cool (and your skins cash), we’ve put together a few tips for the everyday player.
John’s 5 Tips for Better Golf
You don't need a $600 driver to play better golf. You just need to stop making "unforced errors."
1. Play Your Real Numbers. Most guys club themselves based on the one 7-iron they flushed in 2021. Play your average distance. If you hit your 7-iron 155 yards on a perfect day but usually carry it 140, pull the 6. It’s better to be on the front edge of the green than in the woods because you over-clubbed.
"Too many golfers believe that the greatest way to get better is to hit the ball farther and harder... Consistency, not distance, is the secret to excellent golf." — Konnectgolf PGA Professional Staff
2. Aim for the Middle
"Pin seeking" is for people with sponsors. Professionals like Tiger Woods have long admitted that aiming away from flags and toward the "meat" of the green is the secret to winning. A two-putt par beats a "hero shot" that ends up in the water every time. Focus on just getting on safely.
3. Find a Routine
Nerves make you rush, especially in front of a crowd. A pre-shot routine acts as a mental anchor. Take a breath, pick a target, and swing. A consistent cadence—from your practice waggle to your backswing—helps you tune out the guys chirping from the carts and steadies your tempo.
4. Lay Up on Par-5s
Stop trying to reach in two with your 3-wood—that’s the hardest club in the bag to hit consistently. Pros often prefer to "lay up to a number." If you hit a safe iron to a comfortable 80-yard wedge distance, you’re looking at a par or birdie. If you top that wood into the tall grass, you’re looking at a 7.
5. Keep it Moving
"Ready golf" is the only way to play. If you're ready and it's safe, hit. Nobody wants to be stuck behind a group that treats every three-footer like it's for the Masters green jacket. Keeping the pace helps everyone stay in rhythm and keeps the energy high for the 19th hole.Golf moves faster when you aren't overthinking it—a philosophy that’s baked into our DNA.
For more than 100 years, these fairways have stayed true to their roots, offering the same authentic, welcoming golf experience that started back in 1925."
Huron Shores isn't some new-money plastic course. We were founded in October 1925 by five local guys who bought 65 acres of farmland for $5,000. For more than 100 years, this has been a public spot where "there’s never a stranger in the group."
You're playing the same dirt that local legends like Tom Wargo grew up on. Wargo, a farm boy from nearby Marlette, didn’t even start golf until he was 25—then went on to win the PGA Senior Championship. It’s proof that this game is more about grit than fancy gear.
